#OnTheSly x Alpha Ep. 9

I’ve been waiting to feature this guy on #OnTheSly and the day has finally come! I want everybody to meet the epic-ness that is DreemyAlpha. The  24-year-old rapper currently residing in Maryland has BARSZ, okay?! One of the many things I love about this artist is that he stresses the importance of everybody being 100% themselves. "It's one thing to talk about the streets and your life experiences, if those are your life experiences. Sometimes people make music they think people wanna hear. Me, if I ever make it big in this music game, I'm trying to make the vibe like it’s okay to be yourself. You don't have to flow like this, or sound like that. You make your own waves bro." Alpha credits his open and accepting nature to his upbringing. He has lived in Panama and Philadelphia for periods of time and has noticed the cultural difference in each location. Back in high school Alpha admits that following his own waves didn't classify him in the popular crowd. The self proclaimed nerd admits to being a goof ball and liking Star Wars and doesn't care who knows it. "In high school I spent a lot of time getting picked on. It  never really hurt my feelings or nothing like that. I've always had tuff skin." Now he rolls with at the coolest kids in the DMV know as  the "Gang Fulla Dreemy Ni**as." I recently got a chance to talk to Alpha about his music and his dreams.

Q: How did you come up with your name, DreemyAlpha?
A: My parents pretty much came up with it. I am my fathers first son so they named me Alpha. It’s kind of a tradition.
Q: That so cool! So Alpha, tell me how you got into music.
A: I've always liked music. I used to be the youngest of my siblings at first and my older siblings would watch MTV and BET so I used to get exposed to a lot of Missy Elliot and just a lot of music. Anything from like, boy bands to like Aaliyah and everything in between. By the time I was 9-years-old I was trying to make my own music but I don't think I made verses. I think I was just mumbling, I don't know what the hell I was doing. By the time I was 11 or 12 I started to make full out raps. About late middle school, early high school I got into freestyle battling in the lunch room. From then, I became known for free styling and a friend of mine took me to a studio at around 15-years-old. Since then I've been off and on. Many people had been encouraging me to stick with it, but then I realized I couldn't get away from.
Q: That's dope! It has to be like a calling in a sense. So how would you describe your sound?
A: I would have to describe my sound as I guess a positive vibe. I try to do more like good music. Just describing days and experiences. I try to stay away from the street stuff. I know some street stuff, but I try not to talk about it because everybody else already does. I want to make music for different occasions. Make music to help people get through situations. I'm that guy.
Majority of the time when I make music I kinda have the blueprint in my head before the beat is given to me. I work backwards most of the time, and usual have the song idea first. I just try to have fun with the music!

Q: So I’m obsessed with Ocean’s 11! Where did your inspiration for this song come from?
A: It was spring break and I went to Miami with my cousin. We had this amp that could roll on wheels and we were making a party everywhere we went. We actually ended up posting up on Ocean Ave, actually it was Ocean and 11 Ave. After that we turned up the block so hard it was mini riot. The cops came and we had to run out and scurry. After that experience, my cousin came up with the idea and was like "Bro you gotta come up with a song called Ocean 11." I had no idea what the song was gone be about, but everybody said Ocean 11 would be a cool name for a song. The vibes I get from it is that you kinda gotta do some dark things, or some sinful things sometimes to get a piece of paradise.
Q: Yo, I agree because when I heard the song, I immediately thought of the movie “Ocean's 11” and how they was just slick with everything like the vibes the song gives. So hypethical question time! If you could do a collaboration with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be? You can give up to 3.
A: Kendrick Lamar. I don't think we sound alike but I feel like if we did a song together you can kinda see it in your head. Jay-Z. He inspires me, and he kinda inspired "Ocean 11." When I had the vision in my head, I was defiantly thinking Hype Williams-"Big Pimpin'". He actually is one of my idols for real. Tupac is my number one. We don't sound alike, but I feel like woulda found some ground between.
Q: You've said a few times "If I were to really do this music thing" and I was wondering what that meant. Are you just making music and having fun or do you want to make this a career? Where do you see yourself in the industry in the next few years?
A: I do want to be in the industry, but I'm still just trying to put together my whole portfolio. I'm just trying to have fun with it. I would love to be famous off rap, but the most important thing to me is I want to be famous off of music my own way. I want to be able to say I did it my way, not trying to be like everybody else or taking the same route other people did.

Q: Tell me about your future projects coming up.
A:  Since I dropped a couple songs, big artist in the DMV area have started reaching out to me. I dropped one song with a guy named Will The Rapper and Big Flock and it's called "Wave." Both of them are some trap rappers, but what we're doing is trying to find the midpoint to not make it all the way a street song. I got a project I'll probably drop early October or late September called L.O.A.D.I.N.G which is abbreviation of Legend of A DreemyNi**a. Got a lot of video game references on there but more modernized. It's cool. One thing I am focused on too is visuals. If you get a visual from me,  just know it's going to be something dope.  Keys is my guy for visuals, we are on the same page. We wanna get better and do new ideas. Keys and I will drive 3 hours for a 30 minute shoot because we take pride in the visuals.
